Chandrababu Naidu is one of the most prominent figures in Andhra Pradesh politics as well as national politics to some extent. He is a former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and has held many portfolios. But his political career has been marred by corruption charges and many cases leveled against him. This has happened not just in his home state but in other states too.
Corruption in Andhra Pradesh is one of the oldest issues that the state has been dealing with. Chandrababu Naidu has been in the midst of the controversies over corruption which has led to the question “who is 420 in AP”. Corruption has been a huge issue in the last election and it seems people have spoken. They do no want a government that is marred with corruption and left nothing for the people.
Here are some of the top corruption charges leveled against Chandrababu Naidu:
Illegal Land Acquiring from the Farmers in Amravati
TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu and some of his party-men including his brother-in-law and actor-politician Balakrishna Naidu has been accused of corruption. In a video released by the ruling party, Chandrababu Naidu has been accused of getting involved in insider trading and purchasing land in Amaravati before it was announced that it would be state capital in 2014.
Earlier, the Sivaramakrishnan Committee was appointed in March 2014 to determine the location for the capital of the bifurcated state of Andhra Pradesh. Later that year, the state government passed the Capital Region Development Authority Act marking the 25 villages of Tadepalli and MangalagiriMandals of Guntur district as the capital region. But the Sivaramakrishnan Committee’s recommendations “were ignored” as the panel decided that the region was prone to floods and is not suited for a capital region. The ruling party accused that the TDP and people associated with the party bought over 4,000 acres lands, and then the TDP government acquired 33,000 acres of land from the farmers of 29 villagers.
Arrest warrant against Chandrababu Naidu in Maharashtra
Chandrababu Naidu has not only courted controversy in Andhra Pradesh but also in other states as well. This time it was Maharashtra. A local court in Maharashtra has issued an arrest warrant against N Chandrababu Naidu and 15 others. It was related to 2010 case where he was part of an agitation over the Babli project across river Godavari.
Naidu was the then CM of Andhra Pradesh. He and others were arrested and sent to jail in Pune for agitation near the Babli project site in Maharashtra. It wasn’t the first time that he had been in the news for wrong reasons. From corruption charges to staging unnecessary agitation, it goes on. No wonder when people ask who is 420 in AP, his name is likely to appear most of the time.
Cheating Cases Against Chandrababu Naidu
There have been several cheating cases against Chandrababu Naidu even before the state of Andhra Pradesh was divided. In one such incident, he faced a court case for going back on his support for separate Telangana. In the petition it was mentioned that Chandrababu Naidu has supported the formation of Telangana, but he backtracked later on. Support of another state was mentioned in the manifesto and he even joined hands with the TRS before the elections. But when the center announced the formation of separate Telangana, Chandrababu Naidu staged the resignations of his party MLAs and backtracked from his earlier support for another state. This had a huge repercussion.
On the petition of Arun Kumar, thecourt directed the Chaitanyapuri police to register cases under Sections 420 (cheating) and 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) of IPC against Chandrababu Naidu. This seems to in align with his political strategy to win in Andhra Pradesh. No doubt, people have been asking who is 420 in AP when such incidents happen when a prominent political leader makes a promise and then refuses to honor in.
“The King of Corruption”
In many instances Chandrababu Naidu has been termed as the “King of Corruption”by the rival parties. The term “420” has been used against him for many reasons primary of them is due to the corruption in the state when he was the CM.
In one such statement, the then opposition leader was quoted as saying “The king of corruption and his ministers have a single-point agenda of looting public money and they have left no stone unturned and left no avenue without exploiting it to the hilt,”
There is no doubt that whose name would come up when you ask “who is 420 in AP”. When he was the CM of the new Andhra Pradesh, he had been termed as corrupt by the opposition.
In another instance, Sunil Deodhar of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Secretary and co-in charge of Andhra Pradesh, in Vijaywada had said that the former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu would go to jail for corruption in two years. He alleged that Chandrababu Naidu was part of a huge corruption during his tenure as CM and he urged the current CM to send the files to the Centre for probe and action.
This was not the first time that corruption charges have been leveled against him. He also added, that “The money given by the Centre has not reached people. Where that money has gone? It has to be recovered. This theft should be brought to the notice of public and the central government. The files would be sent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for inquiry and action,”. Source
It remains to be seen what happens now. Chandrababu Naidu has been engulfed in corruption charges, along with many allegations of misleading people and breaking promise. People has been mockingly asking “Who is 420 in AP” and the answer seems to be apparent one. The 2019 Andhra Pradesh election was an eye opener for Chandrababu Naidu as he lost and no doubt people were fed-up of all the false promises and piling charges of corruption against him.
