Chandrababu adept at managing democratic institutions: Sajjala

Using yellow media to attack AP government

The Leader of the Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu has become very adept at managing institutions of democracy and was using his talents to attack the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) but is undermining the institutions that are vital for a healthy governance, said Advisor (Public Affairs) to the Andhra Pradesh Government and noted journalist Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy.

He said Mr Chandrababu Naidu was using a section of the media that had gained notoriety as the “yellow media” to launch highly coordinated and concerted attacks on the Andhra Pradesh Government and the YSRCP. “These forces” were using the courts in a most unprecedented manner to take pot shots at the government and party under the guise of “continuous judicial scrutiny”.

Never in the history of the country have so many Public Interest Litigations (PILs) been filed against any state government and subsequently been admitted by the courts, Mr Ramakrishna Reddy pointed out.

Politically motivated cases closed by the lower court in accordance to the Supreme Court guidelines have been reopened suo moto as part of a coordinated effort by Mr Chandrababu and forces that were working to topple the Jagan Mohan Reddy government.

The zeal with which these conspiratorial forces were attacking a democratically elected government was amazing, Mr Ramakrishna Reddy said.

Even before the High Court announced the list of cases pending against the Chief Minister Y.S.Jagan Mohan Reddy that were going to be reopened a vernacular channel had reported it and even organised a panel discussion on it. This was evidence of the concerted effort some forces were making to bring down the government.

While minor cases against Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy were reopened as if these were grave crimes, Mr Ramakrishna Reddy recalled how Mr Chandrababu Naidu had scrapped 130 cases pending against his partymen when he was at the helm of affairs. While Mr Atchannaidu had a molestation charge against him, an attempt to murder case was pending against Ganta Srinivasa Rao.

There were grave cases pending against Devineni Umamaheswara Rao and Nakka Ananda Babu also, but they were simply withdrawn without a second thought. The YSRCP government could not extend any such courtesy to its supporters, Mr Ramakrishna Reddy explained.

The YSRCP government could easily resist these forces that were attacking it, but it was not doing it because that would only distract it from providing good governance to the people.

Mr Chandrababu Naidu had no qualms about managing the democratic institutions like media and judiciary when he was the Chief Minister and he was still doing it even though he was leader of the Opposition with the support of some forces.

The democratic institutes that were being subject to management were confusing the people, who were thinking that there was something wrong because where there was smoke there should be fire.

While there was a need for checks and balances in a democracy there was a fine line that every institute should respect.

Mr Ramakrishna Reddy recalled how the Supreme Court responded cautiously when the Tamil Nadu High Court charged the Election Commission with murder for giving a green signal to elections in spite of the pandemic .
